GDPR

By now I'm sure you're all fed up of GDPR, so we are keeping it simple

There will be three sets of emails going out tomorrow all of which will explain what data we hold, how we use it, and how you can contact us to ask us more:
- to current (paid) club members including parents of junior members - if you do nothing you will continue to receive emails - you will need to opt out to discontinue but we prefer to keep you in otherwise we have no regular method of contact
- to adult prospective members - you will need to opt in to continue receiving emails, if you don't reply we will assume you no longer are considering joining, we will remove you from our distribution list, and also, if you are a member of the VSAC Members Facebook Group, we will remove you from that too
- to parents of junior prospective members (waiting list) - you will need to opt in to continue receiving emails, if you don't reply we will assume you no longer wish to be on the waiting list and we will remove you from our distribution list

Note that in future, new prospective members will be given a link to our data privacy policy on our website.

Training

Tue 29 May - 6pm sessions at GSAL, 7pm session from Leos
Tue 5 June - all sessions from Leos (including navigation session, see below), and food afterwards (pie and peas, see website to order)
Tue 12 June - 6pm sessions at GSAL, 7pm session at Beckett Park
Thursday training - see Facebook posts (NB the Scott Hall group has been on tour recently so don't turn up there without checking!)

Thank you (our junior races)

We had 113 runners in our junior races (results later on in this V S Update), 3 more than when we organised a similar event 2 years ago.

A big thank you to the 65 people who helped - 35 parents, 1 (injured) junior member, 22 senior club members and 7 of our regular club volunteers.

I'm hoping that some of us who were involved can have a brief chat after junior training on Tuesday 4 June - feedback from this event and how the organisation can be shared out a bit more next year now that we know it can be a success.

Also to note that Valley Striders are organising the Meanwood Trail Races on Saturday 15 September this year.  There won't be junior races because of the logistics of car parking and timing, but we do hope that many parents (and juniors) will volunteer to help and that will allow some more of our senior runners to take part rather than marshal.

York Track and Field

For those who want to try track and field but don't want to get stuck in rush hour traffic on a Wednesday evening on the M1 or M621, we recommend the York Summer League.  We also recommend it for the West Yorkshire die-hards too!

There are 4 meetings in total, just one has taken place.  Josie Pawley went to this and Graham said "It was good. Good location with a covered stand to keep you dry (or cool) and friendly organisation. Mixed abilities so even slower runners would enjoy it and not feel out of their comfort zone".

The 3 meetings to go are all at weekends, all have a full programme of events and athletes can choose to take part in up to 3 events at each meeting (unlike West Yorks evening meetings when most age-groups only have 2 events available).

Dates are Saturday 2 June, Saturday 16 June and Sunday 15 July.  You don't have to enter all, you just enter one at a time, £2.50 per event (pre-entry), max 3 events per meeting (2 track 1 field or 1 track 2 field), can do different events at different meetings.

I am happy to send all the entry forms for 2 June, just let me know by 8pm Tuesday 29 May including which events you intend to take part in (we will be at GSAL that evening and between 7pm and 8pm can practice the field events you've selected).

Navigation for beginners and improvers sessions available for Striders!  (from Simon Vallance)

Do you have little or no experience of using an OS map and compass and would like to learn more?  Or you may know the basics in theory but haven't really practiced, especially running on a bearing in low visibility in open country.

Perhaps there are off-road races you fancy trying but they require you to carry a map and compass, and you are worried you might actually have to use them!  Or maybe you have run in such races just following others and hoping for the best!

Mick Loftus and Simon Vallance are offering two navigation lessons, one for complete beginners and one for 'improvers'. If you wish, you could do both.  The beginner session would be at and around Leos and the improver one at Ilkley. The first session will be on the first Tuesday in June, the second, on a Tuesday in July (date to be agreed).

To help you decide which session to go for, the beginner session would cover:
- Introducing OS Maps
- Scales and key symbols
- Linear features
- Distance measurement on the map
- Setting the map using features
- Introducing the compass
- Setting the map using compass
- Using linear features and 'handrails'
- Taking and using a bearing

The improver session would cover:
- OS and Harvey's Maps, and more symbols
- Contours and contour features
- Distance estimation on the ground (pacing and timing)
- Using bearings
- Off path navigation
- Catch features, attack points, bearing off

If you are interested please email Mick at mickloftus@gmail.com  letting us know which session you would like to attend. Alternatively you can join the events on the VS AC page.

Pudsey Junior Race and Eccup Junior Races

Pudsey is on 17 June, details and entries via https://www.runbritain.com/races?keyword=pudsey

Eccup is on 1 July, details and entries via www.racebest.com .

For most juniors, the VS membership fee for 1 Sep 2017 to 31 Aug 2018 included some race entry fees.  We have already paid for Peco race and Peco relays.  Pudsey and Eccup are the final two races in this offer but we have no way of paying these fees on your behalf so IF YOU RUN we will deduct them from your 2018/19 membership fee when it is due this coming September.

Other key dates

Weekend 1-3 June - weekend in the Lakes (see www.valleystriders.org.uk/up180427.htm )
Tuesday 3 July - Danefield Relay
Sunday 2 September - Leeds Country Way Relay
Saturday 15 September - Meanwood Valley Trail Races
Sunday 16 September - Family fun run at Lineham Farm
Saturday 15 or 22 September - Northern 6 and 4 stage relays at Sportcity Manchester

RESULTS

Sheffield Half Marathon

Chris Sawyer emailed "my result from Sheffield Half Marathon on 8 April was

Posn 1040 Gun Time 1:45:30 Chip Time 1:44:49

There are no Valley Striders listed amongst the results – not even me. I am sure there were other Striders at the event. I think the explanation is that if you buy a season ticket for the Run For All Events your club details are not recorded in the results.

If anyone else ran, please reply to the vsupdate account so we can include your result in the "Any Other Half" category of VSGP.

Junior Mile Races and Club Handicap

58 juniors and 4 adults ran the mile, 39 adults ran the 5 mile, results in the next edition

Howgills Trail Marathon (from Kim Spence)

I took part in the Howgills Trail Marathon on Sunday and I was first female in 4 hours 31 minutes

Apart from the Everest Marathon in November (which doesn't count as a proper race....) it is the first marathon since Cortina in Italy 3 years ago!  After taking a bit of time out and then struggling with injuries last year I finally feel like I am making progress again although still not back to where I was.

Clive Bandy suggested I do Howgills as I wanted to do a marathon before we head out to the Alps in July for the Eiger Marathon.  Clive took part in the half marathon and although only half the distance it had all of the tough climbs of the marathon!  It is classed as a trail race but I would say it is more like a fell race and unlike the Burnsall Half Marathon which I took part in a few weeks ago which I would say is perfect for a newbie off road runner I wouldn't suggest tackling Howgills until you are pretty comfortable running off road.  I think I paced the race quite well and I was probably over cautious to start with as I was conscious that I didn't want to blow up.....most people go through a bad patch at some point during a marathon and I had mine at the half way point.  My legs felt really heavy and when we hit a long road section where I thought I would pick up the pace I seemed to get slower...... I overtook the first female at about the ten mile mark but it wasn't long before she passed me again.

The first food stop wasn't until 14 miles and the first female didn't stop but I made sure I had a couple of cups of coke which seemed to perk me up and I went past her again at about 17 miles and managed to get stronger as the race went on.  The running was quite fast after this until about 3 miles to go when we had to go up a really steep climb....not what the legs want and my lack of training in the big hills became apparent at this point!  But thankfully I managed to keep going and took the lead by over 8 minutes in the end.

Perfect weather and stunning views of the Howgills and Lakes.
