Training
I was hoping that we’d be starting training at GSAL next Tuesday but they have made changes to their Safeguarding Policies and it will take us a little while longer to provide proof of compliance.
In particular they are wanting reassurance that we have sufficient leaders with current DBS certificates which have an enhanced DBS check including a ‘children’s barred list’ check.
Our set up at GSAL is that we will have up to 6 groups usually but not necessarily split over two timeslots. Each group has a leader and assistant leader who are responsible for warm ups, getting the children safely from one activity to the next, and cool downs.
The activities are then run by activity teams e.g. a starter and timekeeper for sprints, a measurer and pit raker for long jump etc.
I believe that the minimum requirement is that either the group leader or group assistant leader should have a current enhanced check.
I am hoping that we can provide this from the parents who attend.
Please could anyone who has a current enhanced DBS certificate click on the following link and fill in the very short form https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8TZLQT8 – please do this as soon as possible – thank you.
Competition
Our main mass competitive events are the Eccup Junior 1 and 2 mile races on Sunday 6 July and the Golden Acre Relays on a Tuesday in mid-July (date to be confirmed).
Last year, 32 VS juniors took part in the Eccup junior races and 93 in the Golden Acre Relays.
Details of these and more can be found at
This page also has details of a few more junior races (including some fell races) and of a lot of track & field competitions including a series of 7 meetings at Wakefield starting on Sunday 13 April and a series of 4 meetings at York starting on Monday 21 April. Entries for Wakefield close on Saturday 5 April.
I will be at the 13 April and 21April meetings and many more!
Most of these meetings contain 2 track events for juniors – 75m and 600m for under-11s and 100m and 800m for older. (Under 11 is school years 4 & 5, under 13 is school years 6 & 7, etc).
Most of these meetings contain one or two field events e.g. on 13 April, under-11 competitors can do long jump and/or shot put.
We won’t be able to practice long jump till we get to GSAL but I’m hoping we can find an area at Leos to practice shot put on the next 2 Tuesdays.
These meetings are of a fair standard, so for anyone brand new to track & field I’d suggest they get some practice in during May & June and then enter a competition from then onwards. But anyone new but really speedy over 100m or 800m could try now.
If you are interested in the competitions please email juniors@valleystriders.org.uk and chat to me on Tuesday.
The shot training this coming Tuesday will only be for those considering entering.
