Meanwood Junior Races
Last year we held some races for juniors on a Tuesday evening in
May
– 1km (approximately) for juniors in school years 2 to 4 (there were 45
runners)
– 2km (approximately) for juniors in school years 5 and 6 (42 runners)
– 3km (approximately) for juniors school years 7 and above (26 runners)
Shall we have another one this year? Can
we can get enough volunteers to do promotion and marshal on the day?
Please email [email protected] if you can
help. We will discuss on 5 March.
Membership renewal
Thank you to those who’ve paid recently. We now have 74
still to pay (but that is still one-sixth of our membership)
Juniors not paying by 28 February will be removed from the
membership list, email distribution list and juniors Facebook group as this group
is members-only.
Adults not paying by 31 March will be removed from the membership
list, email distribution list, the VSAC Facebook group and the Fell Runners
Facebook group as these groups are members-only.
I have had at least 10 emails saying “I thought I had
paid”. If in doubt, please check www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm
Any queries please email [email protected] . If
you no longer wish to be a member, please email [email protected] –
it will save us sending you further correspondence, thanks.
If you’ve recently joined Valley Striders there is a page of
useful information on the website www.valleystriders.org.uk/justjoined.htm (this
can also be reached by selecting “For Club Members” or “For New
Members” from the top bar of the website home page.
Team Race Dates
The Grand Prix and Fell Championship races are now listed on the
website www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsdates.htm . Many
are listed with provisional dates based on the equivalent date from 2018; if
you’re aware of confirmed dates please email back.
Here are some team races not in the Grand Prix, please email [email protected] if
you wish to be considered for any, some or all of these.
– Sat 16 March – Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships at Costello Stadium
Hull – individual and team championships, further information can be found
at http://www.yvaa.org/championships/
– Sun 24 March – Northern Road Relays (men’s team of 12, women’s team of 6) at
Birkenhead
– Sat 30 March – Yorkshire Road Relays (men’s team of 4 by 3 miles, women’s
team of 4 by 3 miles) at Bodington. These are not just for elite
runners, I’m sure several clubs will be sending more than one team of each
gender and I wouldn’t be surprised if one or two clubs send 10 or more teams.
Can we get several teams?
– Sun 31 March – Peco Relays (location TBA, probably South Leeds) details to
follow but please make up your own teams
– Sat 6 April – National Road Relays
Sarah Smith is organising teams for the Calderdale Way Relay on
Sun 19 May, email Sarah [email protected] if interested.

These are for teams of 3 runners and there are 6 team categories

mixed (2 girls 1 boy or 1 girl 2 boys)
– older (team contains at least one school year 7 or older) (team may contain
any number of year 7+) – girls, boys and mixed
If you’d like to run, please email [email protected]

Track and Field for Juniors
Last year a number of our juniors went to track & field
meetings organised by City of York AC at York University athletics track. This
year there will be 6 or 7 meetings and the dates are Mon 22 April, Mon 6 May,
Sat 25 May, Sun 9 June, Sun 1 September and Sun 22 September and possibly Sun
28 July. Four of these meetings (the first three and one other) are the
“York Summer League” for which the entry fee last year was £20 for
the series. The other meetings are open meetings – last year the entry fees
were £7.50 in advance or £12 on the day. Under 11’s compete at 75m, 600m, short
putt and long jump, older juniors also have high jump, discus and javelin
available and their distances are 80m and 800m. There is usually a choice of 4
events, sometimes just 3. Details at www.cityofyorkathleticclub.net and
click on “Summer League” or “York Open”.
Our juniors also competed in the West Yorkshire Track and Field
League last year. This year the meetings are at Cleckheaton and
Halifax (but not Wakefield) and the dates are Sun 14 April (Clk),
Wed 1 May (Hfx), Wed 29 May (Clk),
Wed 19 June (Hfx), Wed 10 July (Hfx),
Sun 28 July (Clk) and Sun 9 September (Clk). The first 6 meetings are a series / league and the
cost is £15 for juniors for the series. The cost for the final event is likely
to be around £9. For all Sunday meetings, juniors can compete part in a maximum
of 3 events. Under 11’s compete at 75m, 600m, short putt and long jump, older
juniors also have high jump and discus available and their distances are 80m
and 800m. For the Sunday meetings there is usually a choice of 3 or 4 events,
but for the Wednesday meetings there are usually only 2 available – one track
and one field. Even if you can only go to the Sunday meetings, £15 is
reasonable value. Details at http://www.westyorkshireathletics.org.uk
There are also a number of track and field open meetings at
other venues
– Sun 24 March – Spenborough (school year 4
and above) Details at http://www.spenac.co.uk
– Sun 7 April – Wakefield. There should be info at http://www.wakefield-harriers.co.uk but
the website says the webmaster has retired!
– Sat 20 April – Doncaster (minimum age 8 on day). Details
at http://www.doncasterathleticclub.com/spring-open-meeting-2017 (NB
this is definitely the 2019 meeting even though the URL says 2017)
NB for all of the above, age groups are at 31 August 2019 so
under-11s are school years 4 and 5. York has an under-9 category for their open
meetings and also allows good year 3’s to compete in the under-11 category at
the league meetings but other organisers are more strict on
age categories.
I’m hoping we can book a couple of training sessions at GSAL on
2 and 16 April so that we can practice track and field before the West Yorks
series and City of York series start. If this happens, then we’ll extend the
sessions by half an hour before and after specifically for the juniors entered
for these two series to practice the field events.
There is a post on in the VS Juniors Facebook group for this,
please comment. If you’re not on Facebook, please email [email protected] with
your comments.

National Cross Country
15 juniors and 37 adults had a great day out at Harewood competing
for Valley Striders against the best athletes and clubs in England.
In the three races where we had sufficient runners to make a team,
we finished 32nd, 40th and 38th club (there are over 1000 affiliated athletics
clubs in England).
Just to illustrate how seriously this event is taken, teams came
from as far away as Cornwall, Kent, Cumbria and the Isle of Man. In
the under 13 boys event the first 3 places were taken by athletes from Norfolk,
Dorset and Warwickshire. The top 3 teams were from London, Berkshire
and Cambridgeshire. The VS under 13 boys were the third best placed
team from West Yorkshire and the fourth best team from the whole of Yorkshire.
V S do offer huge
congratulations to Leeds City who were winners of the senior women’s team
trophy and the senior women’s team trophy. Apparently this feat was
last achieved 47 years ago, and at that time the men’s and women’s events were
at different locations, so Leeds City have a
unique result in achieving the double at the same location.
A big thank you to Paul Furness, Steve Dixon, Tosh Akhtar and Mark
Woodhead for helping set up the course on the Friday and to Paul Furness and
Mick Tinker who marshalled on the day and to Sam Harris, Leila Kara and Liz
Adams who helped dismantle the tape and stakes after the final
race. Your correspondent also did some set up and marshalling, then
was subbed by Myra (thank you!) at 2:40pm
and arrived on the start line with 2 minutes to spare!
Thank you also to a good number of V S supporters at many points
round the course.
